Tank Fills

Aquarius Scuba is the first air station in the GTA to meet or exceed the CSA Z180.1 standard.

Have you ever taken the time to consider how the breathing air in your SCUBA tank is compressed in order to produce a consistently safe breathing gas for use underwater?   You’re not alone, many divers have not. The answer to this question, the dive compressor, is often well hidden at the back of the dive shop yet remains the true heart of any dive operation.

Breathing air compressors are expensive to purchase, and even more expensive to run and maintain properly. It is Aquarius Scuba’s first priority to ensure that you, the diver, can purchase a tank fill and rest assured that the quality of that air fill will be first rate. Maintaining this high degree of purity however requires changing filters frequently and regular air testing, both of which are expensive.

Here is a breakdown of some of the typical ongoing costs required to run a breathing air compressor, and keep the air quality as pure and safe as possible:

Compressors require significant amounts of electricity to run. The electrical costs in Ontario have risen substantially in the last five years and compressors consume a lot of hydro!

Compressor Oil: Aquarius only uses the best synthetic oil which protects the compressor’s inner workings, and also lowers the risk of contaminants ending up in your breathing air supply.

Filters:
Prior to filling your tanks, the air from the compressor is filtered through a series of filters containing chemicals which remove any harmful contaminants from the breathing air. These filters must be changed on a regular basis else the air will become dangerous and unsafe to breath. Aquarius runs three filter stacks in a series to give the most filtration capacity of any shop in the GTA. These filters are expensive and in the busy summer months must be replaced almost monthly.

While Aquarius strives to ensure the air you breathe is always pure and safe, it is best practice to double check this purity using an independent accredited compressed breathing air laboratory. To this end, Aquarius Scuba submits air samples twice a year to Maxxam Analytics for analysis.  These tests are expensive but the results show you, the diver, that our air meets or exceeds the current CSA Z180.1 compressed breathing air standard. Feel free to inspect this certificate on the wall by the compressor door.

Other shops may offer fills for a lower price, but remember not all air fill stations are equal. Please ask to see a recent air quality certificate (less than 6 months) showing the purity of the compressor’s air, and also the amount of filtration capacity on the compressor. Your personal health and safety may depend on the answers to these important questions.

Aquarius Scuba is proud of its air fill station and has kept the price of an air fill constant for the last five years. It is hoped that our clients will understand that in order to produce the highest quality breathing air, the price of a fill will increase to $7.00.
